QUOTE FROM THE ARTIST

“One day in 1965, while I was passing through Paris, I went to the Saint Pierre market to stock up on fabric. I found a kind of awning fabric, made up of equal strips. I bought it. It matched what I used to do to liven up my bed sheets. I first used it as a support, covering it partially with paint. But the real break came when I stopped painting. These stripes then became what I called “my visual tool”. Used in different contexts, on walls, in the streets, in museums, they were used to reveal the places I had invested. To take a fresh look at the architecture and the environment.”

IN THE EYES OF YVON LAMBERT

“[My meeting with Daniel Buren in 1968] was very strong. I was truly dazzled by [his] intelligence. I bought some of his works as early as 1969. We organized several exhibitions, totally unsaleable, of course. […] We debated a lot among ourselves, as well as with Michel Claura and René Denizot, but there were few battles around his work because it aroused interest only among rare visitors. I like controversy, and I regretted not being able to polemicize more then. I also liked the paradox of exhibiting unsaleable works in a commercial gallery.”
