NEON continues the sonic exploration initiated with Songbook, a project presented at the 2019 Venice Biennale. The work blended contemporary music, electronic music, jazz, and rock, while questioning the complexity of musical composition and tradition. NEON takes this reflection even further by integrating artificial intelligence to create a unique work in which the human voice transcends its natural limits. The project is rooted in both a personal and symbolic approach: merging the human and digital worlds to offer a new vision of identity, authenticity, and sound.
Thanks to AI voice synthesis, Tovel’s voice can now express emotions and ideas that were previously inaccessible, giving rise to unprecedented melodies and sonic textures. The project explores a wide musical spectrum while maintaining depth in composition and writing. AI becomes a creative partner, enabling the boundaries of vocal expression and musical composition to be pushed further.
NEON deconstructs the traditional song structure through a sequence of 12 pieces marked by dynamic and creative shifts. The aim is to preserve a sense of unity while exploring new rhythmic and harmonic approaches, without falling into excessive genre hybridization.
The use of AI raises questions about the authenticity of the synthetic voice. Can it truly convey human emotion, or does this “perfection” risk erasing the imperfections that nourish art?
NEON explores the possibilities of AI while questioning what it means to be human in a world where creativity is shaped as much by the machine as by the soul.

Matteo Franceschini, a composer of works for theatre, orchestral, choral, and chamber music compositions, as well as performances and film scores, is one of the most original artists of his generation. His music is distinguished by a strong theatrical and narrative dimension, shaped through experimental combinations and creative encounters between diverse artistic languages, all supported by a constant exploration of timbre.
Franceschini’s musical imagination — both incisive and often dreamlike — seeks to achieve complex syntheses within composition, while also aiming to revitalize the figure of the author/performer (under his stage name, TOVEL) in relation to the very act of composing. His goal is to develop new dimensions within the field of performance, defining the creative act as an organic and singular union between the processes of composition and interpretation
